what is datajournalistiek.nl?
datajournalistiek.nl is a blog and professional practice of a data journalist Winny de Jong. The blog’s main focus is on data driven journalism and offers insights from the field, personal observations, useful tutorials and resources. Winny is a great collector of inspiration and ideas, which she shares regularilly with her network via her blog, various social media, weekly newsletter, lectures and presentations.
the design concept
The visual identity of datajournalistiek.nl is based on simple and minimalistic typography, fresh colour palette and monochromatic imagery. It offers possibility of strong visual highlights, while keeping visual impression clean and professionally looking.
The logotype is minimalistic and simple, using a ligature of the letters T and I.
The design of the blog’s website is built on existing WP theme “Weta” from Elma Studio, by adjusting the theme to specific needs of datajournalistiek.nl. The old version of the blog was lacking clean hierarchy and it was visually not communicating efficiently. After proper analysis of the content, we co-developed new hierarchy and I suggested a set of simple visual rules how to distinguish different categories of information.
Winny loves vibrant colours and wished to use them in her visual identity, but was hesitating to do so to not loose seriousness. The final design proves, that it is possible to use vibrant colour palette and keep the serious value of data-driven journalism.
The colours are sorting the information and highlighting different kinds of information.
The newsletter is consisting of simple list of interesting links Winny offers to her readers every week. It is carrying the same visual language as the blog and is one of multiple applications of the final visual identity in digital use – freely editable and adjustable.
The business cards are in fact memo-pads – empty paper sheets for small notes with pre-printed contact details, foldable in the size of a business card.
